Stunting or chronic malnutrition is still a problem in Indonesia. Specifically for the Province of Papua, the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) has prepared Rp1.3 billion to support efforts to prevent and manage stunting.

"There are 22 districts / cities in Papua Province, (each) getting stunting handling funds in the amount of Rp. 60 million," said BKKBN Deputy Family Planning and Reproductive Health Dwi Listyawardani in Biak, Papua on Monday (8/4/2019) as quoted. Antara News.

One of the BKKBN efforts in stunting prevention is through the Toddler Family Development Program (BKB). Manifested in an effort to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant women and infants and the adoption of good parenting, especially in the first 1,000 days of life.

"Everything that happens during the first 1,000 days of the life phase becomes a determining factor for the quality of life of children so they are not stunted," Dwi said.

Dwi also emphasized the importance of involving many sectors in efforts to prevent and deal with nutritional problems that cause children with short and low cognitive levels.

While in Jayapura, the Jayapura City Government through the local Health Service announced stunting rates in the region in 2018 and then dropped to 22.81 percent from 34.8 percent in 2013.

"From Jayapura City Government data based on basic health research that the stunting rate in 2018 dropped to 22.81 percent from the 2013 data recorded at 34.8 percent," said the Head of the local Health Service Dr. Ni Nyoman Sri Antari.

The decline in stunting in Papua, which was originally in 2013, the stunting rate of 40.1% decreased to 32.9% in 2018. Whereas in West Papua from 44.6% in 2013 to 27.8% in 2018.

Life expectancy in Papua was 64.74 in 2013 increased to 65.36 in 2018. And in West Papua from 65.14 in 2013 to 65.15 in 2018.

The acceleration of Papuan welfare development through government support for local economic products has also succeeded in improving the people's economy and reducing poverty in Papua and West Papua. The percentage of poverty in the Papuan community decreased from 30.05% in 2014 to 27.43% in 2018. While West Papua from 27.13% in 2014 became 22.55% in 2018.
