Situation in Papua is Peaceful Ahead of OPM Anniversary

The National Police Headquarters confirmed, the situation in Papua ahead of the Anniversary of the Free Papua Organization (HUT OPM) on December 1 will be fairly safe.

"In general the situation is peaceful and conducive," said Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police Public Relations Commissioner Asep Adi Saputra at the National Police Headquarters, South Jakarta, Thursday (11/28/2019).

According to Asep, the National Police has appealed to the Papuan people not to hold any celebrations at the OPM Anniversary on December 1, 2019.

"As the Papua Police Chief has said, he stressed that on December 1 there were no celebrations," he explained.

Even so, the police continue to conduct surveillance to anticipate security and order disturbances in Papuan society.

"The Indonesian National Police continues to anticipate various things, develop in relation to the situation there. Overall things that are analyzed in our scope and anticipation are also carried out," Asep stressed.

Meanwhile, the Papua Regional Police mobilized 1,300 personnel to secure the Papua region ahead of the OPM Anniversary on December 1.

Papua Police Chief Inspector General Paulus Waterpauw after a meeting with community and religious leaders in Jayapura on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 admitted that many personnel were deployed to secure the Papua region to provide a sense of security to the community.
