The highest region in Indonesia has been successfully electrified

Indonesia succeeded in passing electricity to the highest area, namely Ilaga District, the center of the capital city of Puncak Regency, Papua Province. In the district, on average 1,500-4,000 meters above sea level.
.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif said that the region already operates a Micro Hydro Power Plant (PLTMH) with a capacity of 2 x 350 kW.
.
"This is an opportunity for residents in Papua to improve their quality of life by utilizing the potential of local renewable energy," Minister Arifin said in his press release on Friday. Through the utilization of this local energy source, Ilaga is increasingly independent to meet the electricity needs of its citizens.
.
Ilaga District is the highest area not only in Papua, but also in Indonesia. The area is surrounded by a series of Jayawijaya mountains so that this area is isolated. The only way in and out of Ilaga is Ilaga Airport, which can only be reached from Timika for 40 minutes.
.
"With enough electricity, life in Papua will be better, the economy will run," he said. "The most important thing is children can study at night, so human resources can be better."
.
This power plant is only able to flow electricity to 600 families (KK). The electricity comes from 2 x 800 liter / second water discharge using 2 units of turbines. The total cost of this project, data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, amounted to Rp99 billion.
.
According to Minister Arifin, local energy sources are suitable for use in areas with topography and geography in remote areas such as Ilaga. "The government encourages the availability of electricity from local energy sources, especially the use of renewable energy," said Minister Arifin.
