PON 2020 is a place to show the talent of Papua to the world

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) chaired a limited meeting (ratas) with his staff to discuss the XX National Sports Week (PON) held in Papua in 2020. The Ratas were held at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, on Friday (17/01/2020).

"The implementation of PON XX in 2020 which will take place in Papua from 20 October to 2 November 2020 is very close, therefore this limited meeting will continue from the previous meeting," said President Jokowi.

In his direction, President Jokowi said the enthusiasm of organizing PON in Papua was not merely a sporting competition. The most important thing according to him, also as an arena to strengthen the fabric of brotherhood, interwoven unity, and solidarity between regions.

The President did not forget to mention about one of the objectives of holding a PON in Papua. "At the same time showing the world that Tanah Papua was born with great talents in the field of sports," Jokowi said.

Specifically, the President requested a report from the Deputy Governor of Papua regarding the development of infrastructure that already existed at the venue. The implementation of PON XX itself will be centered in four regions, namely Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Mimika Regency, and Merauke Regency.

At the end of the introduction, the Head of State advised that the development of supporting infrastructure should not only be used for the implementation of the XX PON. The President wants these facilities to be used also for other activities after the implementation of the PON.

"Do not let sports facilities and infrastructure that have been built at a significant cost will not be utilized anymore because they are not maintained. Therefore, I emphasize again that the Governor of Papua, Papua Province makes plans to utilize these sports facilities and infrastructure, especially for developing superior seeds for children. "Papuans in sports," he said.

While in other places, the Governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe conveyed, for the sake of the pride of Papua as the host of PON XX in 2020, we need a vision and mission together, unite, work to organize the development of achievements of Papuan athletes in a comprehensive manner to lift the dignity and status of the Papua region towards "XX PON success and Achievement Success".

"Let us take PON XX in 2020 as a good host, introducing Papua which is unique in terms of culture, dance, carving and natural beauty, which is a special charm for contingents who come from various provinces in Indonesia," he said.
