Ondofolo plays an important role in the preservation of the Cyclops |
Researchers from the Papua Archaeological Center, Hari Suroto, said that ondofolo or the highest adat leaders had an important role in reminding their citizens not to damage the Mountain of the Cyclops and to preserve it.
.
"A year ago, floods and landslides hit Sentani, Jayapura, as a result of damage to the Cyclops or Dobonsolo nature reserves," Hari Suroto said when confirmed from Makassar on Saturday.
.
This environmental damage is caused by human activities that damage the Cyclops Mountains, illegal logging or opening land for gardening.
.
The Cyclops Mountains, called the Dobonsolo Mountains or the Robhong Holo Mountains, are the mountain ranges in Jayapura which have a length of 36 kilometers and stretch from west to east.
.
The Cyclop Mountains have some of the highest peaks, namely Mount Dafonsoro (1,580 masl), Mount Butefon (1,450 masl), Mount Robhong (1,970 masl), Mount Helufoi (1,960 masl), Mount Rafeni (1,700 masl), and Mount Adumama (1,560 masl)) .
.
"Local wisdom related to the beliefs of the Sentani people needs to be explored and preserved that in Cyclops is a world of gods," he said.
.
Regarding the preservation of the Cyclops, he said, ondofolo has an important role in reminding its citizens not to damage the Cyclops which results in an angry god living in the Cyclops.
.
Cyclops is believed to be the home of the God of Life-Giving, namely Hokaimiyae or the motherland. Besides Cyclops also guarded by four other gods that spread to the four cardinal directions, namely east (nu), west (wai), south (ebun), and north (dobon).
.
"The first three gods are disastrous gods, namely suffering, misery, and various diseases including floods and landslides. Dobon is considered a god that brings prosperity," he said.
.
In his culture, he added, the Sentani people believed that ondofolo or the highest adat leader was the representation of gods on earth. They believe that from the mouth of ondofolo there are only two words, namely blessing (onomi) and curse (pelo).
