Farmers in Manokwari Accelerate Rice Planting Ahead of Drought

Towards the dry season, farmers in West Papua are asked to speed up rice planting. Like the farmers in Prafi Mulya Village, Prafi District, Manokwari District, West Papua accelerated the second rice planting season (MT II) of 276 hectares of the 822.5 ha target in the region.

Prafi District Agricultural Extension Coordinator, Djaka Mastuti said Manokwari is trying to speed up planting because the current availability of water in the land is still there.

"So it is necessary to plant as soon as possible before the availability of water in the land decreases," said Djaka Mastuti on the sidelines of the planting activity of planting season II in the Ngudi Rejeki farmer group from Gapoktan Karya Bersama, Friday (3/7).

The rice varieties planted were Sertani 4, Inpari 4, Inpari 30 and Mekongga on 276 ha of the target 822.5 ha for MT II. The declaration of the planting of MT II lowland rice was attended by Governor Dominggus Mandacan.

On that occasion the governor invited farmers to continue working even in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic without ignoring health protocols.

"The provincial government will buy farmers' rice, to maintain food security in West Papua, especially Manokwari," Governor Dominggus said.

The Central Extension Officer, Siti Nurjanah at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture as a companion to agricultural extension activities in West Papua Province said the steps of the farmers and Manokwari extension were in line with the instructions of the Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo.

The Minister of Agriculture in his message said that the potential for rice harvest in June 2020 was estimated at 0.74 million hectares, which could produce 1.94 million tons of rice. This is an effort to achieve food security and provide food for 267 million people of Indonesia.

Minister of Agriculture Syahrul invited extension agents and farmers to use the rest of the rainy season until July 2020, to accelerate planting to support a target planting area of ​​11.66 million hectares throughout Indonesia.

"The potential rice harvest in June 2020 is estimated at 0.74 million hectares, which can produce 1.94 million tons of rice as an effort to achieve food security and available food for 267 million people of Indonesia," said the Minister of Agriculture.

Meanwhile, the Head of BPPSDMP Dedi Nursyamsi emphasized that his office continues to develop agricultural extension agents to become the main agents in agricultural development to support the performance of farmers maintaining national food security.
