Expansion of Papua Region Facilitates Health Services

The plan to expand the Papua region was welcomed by Papuan leader Willem Frans Ansanay. He said, expansion will have an impact on the even distribution of the health sector.

Currently, he said, a number of problems were still encountered in Papua. For example, the budget allocation for health is only 15 percent left. Supposedly, the health sector budget could be 25 or 50 percent.

"Infrastructure can be allocated with other budget allocations," said Willem after the Moya Discussion Group-Unity In Development of Diversity (UID) Webinar with the theme Health in Papua through the Special Autonomy Fund.

Willem said that the limited health facilities and long distances became an obstacle in health services. For this reason, one solution is to expand the Papua region.

The revision of Law (UU) Number 21 of 2001 concerning Special Autonomy (Otsus) for Papua regulates a number of aspects. Among other things, reinforcing plans for regional expansion or the provincial government (pemprov) in Papua.

"It is carried out or affirmation of Article 76 concerning the expansion of the Papua region. With the expansion, it is hoped that health services can be faster, more precise and easier for the public to feel," said Willem.

"For this reason, the supervision of Papua's Special Autonomy funds must be carried out thoroughly, so that these funds are carried out optimally. I encourage the expansion of Papua so that community services can be easily reached," he explained.

Meanwhile, Papua observer Professor Imron Cotan supports the expansion of Papua. This is due to the fact that Papua is so large with a population that is not large so that health services are somewhat hampered. You can imagine, it would take days to cover the area.

"I agree with the expansion to facilitate health services in Papua. Because health is the main factor in meeting human needs. With good health and good education, the future of the Papuan people is better," he hoped.
