Papua is Safe, Peaceful, and Ready to Host XX PON

Jayapura Mayor Benhur Tommy Mano said that Papua was ready to host the XX National Sports Week (PON) on October 2-15.

To note, Jayapura City is one of the cluster locations for the XX PON. The other locations are Jayapura, Mimika and Merauke regencies.


"I told the governors, 33 provincial KONIs throughout Indonesia and athletes that Papua is safe, Papua is peaceful, and Papua is ready to host the PON," said Benhur when he was a resource person at the 9th Merdeka Barat Forum virtually with the headline "Peeking". Readiness of the XX Papua PON” Thursday (24/6/2021).

Therefore, he asked the public not to worry about security issues in Papua. The location of the shooting between the TNI-Polri and an armed criminal group several months ago is far from the venue or the athlete's residence.

Thus, Benhur ensured that PON Papua could run smoothly thanks to the ongoing implementation of the Covid-19 vaccination in four PON clusters. This is expected to prevent the risk of transmission during the event.

“In accordance with the president's order that the public must be vaccinated, those who sell accessories must be vaccinated, athletes and those who will watch must also be vaccinated. It was proven in the four clusters, now their enthusiasm for coming to be vaccinated is quite high,” he said.

"We have also sprayed malaria in these four clusters," he explained.

According to Benhur, the venues in the four clusters of PON XX Papua are 100 percent complete and ready to be used.

He hopes that even though Papua PON is physically ready, communication and coordination between the Great Committee (PB PON) and the local government hosting the PON can run more smoothly so that PON preparation remains optimal.

“The venues in the four clusters are 100 percent ready. The most important thing is that communication, coordination and openness must be done well because this is the biggest sporting event. We are just waiting for the equipment and a test event will be held in August," he concluded.
