Build Papua with a Humanist Approach through Social Culture

Development in Papua continues to be a concern, both the wishes of the local community and the public of the country. The development method on Cenderawasih Earth is expected to prioritize humanist development.

According to the Executive Director of the Human Studies Institute (HSI) Rasminto, developing Papua should prioritize a humanist approach through social culture. Customary elements in culture cannot be judged with views from other cultures. Assessment can only be done from the cultural value system itself.

“Customs are personal. This means that a certain community custom can only be understood by getting closer to the cultural values in the community that owns the custom," said Rasminto on the sidelines of the Jabodetabek Papuan Student Workshop at RM Gubug Udang Cibubur, East Jakarta, Wednesday (23/2). ).

The workshop was themed “OAP Students Welcome the Government's Humanist Approach in the Land of Papua”. OAP are indigenous Papuans.

Apart from Rasminto, the workshop also presented the Chairperson of the Papua Bamus Willem Frans Ansanay, Charles Kossay (a Master's degree student from the National University from Jayawijaya Regency), and Imron Cotan (Indonesian Ambassador to Australia for the period 2002-2005).

Rasminto continued, human development places humans as the ultimate goal of development with an ethnic and cultural-based approach (ethno development) in Papua. "Ethnic and cultural diversity possessed by each region in Papua has different needs," he continued.

On the same occasion, Imron Cotan said that the development of Papua can be carried out by dividing the province - as has been the government's discourse. He hopes that the expansion of Papua Province will soon be realized. With the expansion, there will be an even distribution of development. Both in terms of health, education, infrastructure, and so on.

"The expansion aims to improve welfare, not to divide the people," said Imron.

He emphasized that the formation of a new autonomous region (DOB) is an opportunity to open up new jobs, as well as shorten the public administration space for the Papuan people. "So that the people get better and faster service," said Imron in front of dozens of Papuan Orang Asli (OAP) students.

The former RT Ambassador to China encouraged Papuan young people to always be eager to learn. This method is considered to be able to help Papua become more advanced. "The OAP community must have a brighter future by going to school," said Imron.
