Waterpauw: Stunting in West Papua needs serious attention

Acting Governor of West Papua Paulus Waterpauw said that cases of stunting or stunting in children in the province needed serious attention.

"Therefore, the risk factor or prevalence of stunting in West Papua will be one of our priority agendas to lead the transitional government," said Paulus Waterpauw in Manokwari, Saturday (21/5).

In this short period of government transition, he said, his party was trying to make real interventions in the health sector to reduce stunting, which is quite alarming.

He invited all parties to be responsible for the health and education of children in West Papua Province, especially children's health related to stunting cases which were quite high in the midst of development progress and within the framework of Special Autonomy (Otsus).

"There must be joint efforts and solutions to reduce stunting cases in West Papua. The health of children who are free from stunting is the real face of the government's presence," said Waterpauw.

The stunting rate in West Papua in 2022 is nationally at 26.2 percent from 13 regencies and cities, even six regions of which have a stunting prevalence of more than 30 percent.

The Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) of West Papua Province recorded six regions with a prevalence of stunting toddlers above 30 percent, namely Arfak Mountains Regency (Pegaf) at 40.1 percent, South Sorong 39.6 percent, Tambrauw 39.4 percent, Maybrat 34.5 percent, Raja Ampat 31.1 percent, and Teluk Wondama Regency 31.0 percent.
