The Ministry of Communications and Informatics Encourages the Active Role of Papuan Women in Sorong City, This is What It Does!

President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) affirmative policy for indigenous Papuans (OAP) is manifested in various regulations and policies implemented in the spirit of accelerating welfare development in Papua and West Papua Provinces.

The role and participation of Papuan women in President Jokowi's policies is realized through various efforts to empower human resources (HR).

This was conveyed by the Assistant Special Staff to the President of the Republic of Indonesia for Education, Innovation, and Outermost Regions, Isnaini Varidah Uswanas on the occasion of the Public Discussion Forum on the Participation of Papuan Women in Welfare Development, at the Lambert Jitmau Building, Sorong City, West Papua, Wednesday (21/21). 9/2022).
 
"Socio-economic movements need to be emphasized for the younger generation of Papua, especially Papuan women, to establish their own businesses or companies with the breath of social entrepreneurship," said Nanny as she is familiarly called.

It is known that the public discussion forum was held in collaboration between the Directorate of Political, Legal and Security Information and Communication, the Directorate General of Public Information and Communication, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and the Office of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, Sorong City, West Papua.
 
In addition to Nanny, the forum also presented the Head of the Sorong City Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Service (PPPA), Eltje Salomina Doo, a Psychology Lecturer at the Sorong Christian Messiah High School, Susance Saflesa, and a young Papuan entrepreneur Yunita Ulim.

Nanny, who was born in Fakfak, said that the opportunity for Papuan women to empower themselves in the digital information and communication era is very wide open.
 
The use of social media needs to be used as a tool to build a strong digital identity for women while also having a positive impact on themselves and their followers.

“Papuan women must be competitive in the economic, educational, social and political fields. Opportunities are wide open when we are together as a united women's force," said Nanny.
 
This was confirmed by the Acting Mayor of Sorong George Yarangga whose remarks were read by the Mayor's Expert Staff for Community and Human Resources, Gamar Malabar.

He encouraged Papuan women in Sorong City to be able to get involved in politics, economy, industry, banking, BUMN and BUMD.
 
"In Sorong City, the Office of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection was entrusted to the Tanah Moi woman, namely Eltje Salomina Doo's mother," said Gamar while giving an example.

On the same occasion, the Head of the Sorong City PPPA Service, who is familiarly called Eda, said that the Sorong City government supports President Jokowi's programs and policies in elevating the dignity of women, especially Papuan women who want to be competitive in the economic and political fields.

"The PPPA Office will develop programs and activities for women's empowerment in accordance with the needs and character of the people in Sorong City," said Eda.
 
In the discussion, Susance Saflesa as a psychology lecturer at the Mesias Sorong Christian College and also an observer of women and children invited the people of Sorong City to maintain standards of support so that when Papuan women are empowered, their children will grow up healthy and smart as the next generation of Papua.

In the same discussion, Yunita Ulim as an entrepreneur said that the challenge in doing business is to invite Papuan mamas to become producers, distributors, and even marketing for locally made products.

"We invite the people of Sorong City to support Papuan women in doing business so that they are able to have additional income and even make it the main income for their households," said Yunita.
