557 Refugees returned to their village in Kiwirok

A total of 557 people who had been displaced due to security disturbances in their area, returned to Kiwirok on foot on Tuesday.

The Gunung Bintang Police Chief AKBP Cahyo Sukarnito told Antara on Tuesday that the refugees from Kiwirok had returned to their hometowns, including those who had taken refuge in Oksibil, the capital of the Gunung Bintang Regency, Papua Mountains.

The repatriation of the refugees was released by the Regent of the Bintang Mountains, Spei Yan Bidana, in Oksibil, Tuesday, said AKBP Cahyo.

He said the refugees would walk for about 23 hours from Oksibil but there were hundreds who took refuge in villages where there was no security disturbance.

During the conflict, apart from fleeing to Oksibil, they also fled to several villages, such as Balusu, Kabiding, Epsipding, Okpol, and Bulangkop villages.

"Residents fled after security disturbances occurred after armed groups attacked health workers and civilians," said Cahyo.

It was explained, the Gunung Bintang Regional Government would help the refugees for six months.

Security disturbances in Kiwirok occurred on September 21 2021, after an armed group attacked health workers causing Gabriela Melani to die and four colleagues and a doctor injured.

The KKB led by Lamek Taplo also burned a number of public facilities in Kiwirok including the health center, Bank Papua cash office and market, explained the Chief of the Gunung Bintang Police AKBP Cahyo Sukarnito.
