West Papua Transportation Agency Calls Eight Papuan Children Successfully Become Pilots

The West Papua Province Transportation Service (Dishub) revealed that the number of Papuan children who have taken pilot education is eight.

Domestic airlines have looked at two of the eight pilots, and it is estimated that two more will be distributed in early January 2023.

"In 2022 we have sent eight Papuan children to school to become pilots," said Head of Air Transportation and Railways, West Papua Transportation Agency, Max L Sabarofek when interviewed in Manokwari, Monday (20/12/2022).

He explained that the eight pilots had qualified competence in the multi-engine category.

The previous year, the West Papua Transportation Agency had sent two native Papuan children to study pilot training.

So, a total of 12 pilots from West Papua.

"They are not single-engine but multi-engine, so they can carry any aircraft," explained Max Sabarofik.

According to him, the quality of Papua's human resources (HR) in the field of air transportation is still very minimal compared to other provinces.

Even so, the government is still trying to give Papuan children the opportunity to take part in the pilot school scholarship selection.

"There are actually a lot of human resources for Papuan children. We will continue to try to send them to pilot schools," said Sabarofek.

He continued, there are nine out of 12 pilots native to Papua (OAP) who have been sent to school.

All of them will later work for airlines in Indonesia.

"It is possible, they can also bring foreign aircraft," he said.

Not only pilots, the West Papua Transportation Agency has prepared four human resources for the railway sector.

The four of them have completed their education to become train engineers, while waiting for the completion of the Manokwari-Sorong railway project.

"They are now working in the (West Papua Transportation Agency) office. The infrastructure is not ready, but the human resources are ready," concluded Max Sabarofek.
