Papua Optimistic Exceeds Online Census Targets

The online population census is promoted by the Central Statistics Agency from 15 February to 31 March 2020. The census through the online system requires people to fill in census data online.

The Head of BPS Papua, Simon Sapary, said he was targeted by the Central BPS to meet the target of between five to 10 percent of community participation of all Papuans.

"The population in Papua is approximately 3.4 million, and at least we can reach 300 people who register themselves online. But I am sure, we can surpass the target set by the center," Sapary said, Monday, February 17, 2020.

He explained the targets set by the central government were quite reasonable. That is because the terrain, conditions, and infrastructure in Papua are not very supportive for the continuity of online success.

"Internet access here (Jayapura City) sometimes does not work well, especially in remote areas of Papua such as in the mountainous regions of Papua. This will certainly be difficult, and this will be a challenge for us as officers," he said.

In addition to terrain challenges, according to Sapary, most Papuan people do not have a Family Card (KK) and an Identity Card (KTP). Whereas one of the requirements in conducting an online census is to have a KK and KTP.

"This is a problem, but there are still other methods that we do to record all Papuans, namely the conventional census method that will be carried out in July 2020. To have a KK and KTP, the community must be in contact with the Population Service, so that personal and family data can be well recorded, "he explained.

He said the census was quite important for the people of Papua. Because the census data will serve as a benchmark for the central and regional governments to determine policies on education, health, and also supporting infrastructure.

"I hope, all the people who inhabit the island of Cenderawasih to take a moment to register themselves in the population census online. Because this is not for anyone, but for ourselves," he hoped.
