The Government Guarantees the Security of PON 2020 in Papua, All Disorders Have Been Resolved

The government guarantees the security of organizing the 2020 National Sports Week (PON) in Papua. The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Mahfud MD said, the security forces could overcome all the disturbances ahead of the biggest sporting event in Indonesia.

"About the efforts to disrupt the PON, it has been discussed that the PON will continue well," Mahfud MD said in a press conference at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Politics and Security, Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, Gambir, Central Jakarta, Thursday (3/4/2020) .


The PON in Papua will take place from 20 October to 2 November 2020. The location of the event will be in Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Merauke Regency and Mimika Regency.

At the moment the spotlight is Mimika - a district which is famous for the location of the PT Freeport gold mine - because of frequent shootings.

On Monday 2 March, a Tembagapura police patrol car was fired at by gunmen while passing through Kampung Utiki Lama, Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency. The police who brought the car, First Brigadier Andika Walli was injured in the bullet fragments.

According to Mahfud MD, the TNI-Polri apparatus has handled all security problems in Papua in accordance with standard procedures, so that the implementation of PON is guaranteed to run smoothly.

"The government has anticipated everything, so that the National Police answer is correct. I don't need to add any more, that there is indeed such a disturbance and it has been resolved based on existing SOPs in the National Police," he concluded.
