The expansion of Papua is at hand

The division of Papua Province is in sight. The plan to expand the largest province in Indonesia has received the green light from the government. Here's the picture.

Initially, the discourse on the expansion of Papua was conveyed by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). Jokowi said that regional expansion throughout Indonesia was under a moratorium. There are 183 regions that want to expand. However, specifically for the Central Highlands region, Papua, Jokowi made an exception.

"Actually, I say what it is. I have told you from the start we have a moratorium. There is no division in all of Indonesia," said Jokowi.

Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian said the central government is waiting for an agreement among Papuans in the central region regarding the expansion of a new province. The name of the new province has not yet been agreed upon.

According to Tito, residents in the Timika and Nabire regions proposed the name of the province, Central Papua. Timika will later become the center of the province.

"Meanwhile, there are several regents who want the name of Central Papua Province, not the Mountains of Central Papua Province, including Timika, Mepago and Nabire. The center is in Timika," he said.

In addition to differences in opinion on the name of the new province, Tito said it was possible for the central and upper parts of Papua to become two different provinces. Tito described the areas that will include the new province later.

Tito then reported the plan to expand Papua to the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md. Mahfud said the plan to expand Papua was carried out solely so that the range of development management was effective.
