BNPT opens the possibility of KKB Papua to be categorized as terrorist organization

The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) talks about the definition of an armed criminal group (KKB) in Papua. BNPT said it was in discussions to open up opportunities to include the Papuan KKB into a terrorist organization in Indonesia.

Initially the Head of the BNPT, Komjen Boy Rafli Amar, conveyed about the difference in understanding regarding the KKB in Papua during a joint hearing with Commission III of the DPR RI, at the DPR / MPR complex, Jakarta, Monday (22/3/2021). Boy said that KKB is often referred to as OPM or TPM.

"Indeed, there is a tendency for differences in our understanding related to the existence of the KKB or there they want it to be called OPM, TPM, more than the KKB, they are actually happy to be called that," said Boy.

Boy then mentioned the existence of the KKB in Papua which he said could be categorized as a terrorist organization. He said that his party was initiating discussions with ministries and agencies to determine the mention or nomenclature of the KKB as a terrorist organization.

"We are continuing to initiate discussions with several KL regarding the KKB nomenclature issue as to whether this could be categorized as a terrorist organization, because earlier you have said that the crimes committed by the KKB actually deserve to be categorized or aligned with acts of terror because of using violence, threats of violence, using violence. "Senpi creates a widespread fear effect in the community, the real conditions on the ground can actually be said to have carried out acts of terror," he said.

Boy argued that the KKB spread terror in Papua. He said the BNPT was coordinating with various parties to determine the status of the KKB in Papua.

"Real conditions on the ground can actually be said to have committed acts of terror. So in this case we are opening various rooms for discussion including other Ministries of Institutions, and we will invite Komnas HAM and fathers figures of the DPR RI whether we can nominate the KKB. declaring it a terror network group, we also want to see opportunities and make suggestions why this TPM / OPM or KKB which has claimed the lives of many state apparatus and civil society is categorized as a banned organization, this certainly needs discussion, "he said.

"We are promoting the discussion so that our society can be seen openly and objectively so that the suspicions of the perpetrators (KKB) can use the criminal act of terrorism," he continued.

Boy also said that there were a number of descendants of the Al Qaeda and ISIS groups who had the potential to spread terror in Papua. He said this was also a concern for BNPT.

"However, if we look at the global call for the threat of terrorism which is influenced by the influence of Al Qaeda and ISIS and its derivatives from various countries and in Indonesia, we see that potential is also quite present in Papua, although it is not as big as the potential threat in Java, but with the existence of certain parties that have been identified trying to develop the group's understanding in Papua, "he said.
