The PON Papua hockey team wants to give the best performance
The National Sports Week hockey team or PON Papua is confident that they will be able to appear competitive in the XX Papua PON. Chairperson of the Indonesian Hockey Federation for Papua Province, Jan Dance Kabarek said that the two and a half years of training in the PON Papua hockey team was ready to give its best results.
Kabarek stated that his team had undergone a training camp for two and a half years in Biak Numfor Regency and Jayapura Regency. He expressed his gratitude for the support from the residents of Sentani, the capital of Jayapura Regency, who supported his team to train.
"In every training session, both in the Gunung Merah field and the Ifar Gunung Regional Military Command Regiment, we hope that people will come to watch and provide support. The sport of hockey is not well known by the wider community, ”said Kabarek when he was met in Sentani, Thursday (22/4/2021).
He stated that the PON Papua hockey team will participate in four hockey match numbers. According to him, 20 athletes are competing for the quota of 18 players who will compete in the men's / women's outdoor hockey numbers. In addition, 14 athletes will compete in men's / women's indoor hockey numbers.
According to Kabarek, the competition for hockey in the XX Papua PON will be tight. Kabarek stated that the PON hockey teams of East Kalimantan, East Java, West Java and DKI Jakarta are strong teams that are highly reckoned with in PON.
He stated that the competition map was becoming more difficult to predict, because the COVID-19 pandemic made the hockey championship abolished. "Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world, there were a number of championships that we participated in. Both Regional Championships, National Championships, even international level championships. After that, we focus on centralized training, "he said.
Kabarek hopes that hockey will be popular with the public, such as football, rowing, boxing and volleyball. Kabarek stated that hockey must be taught and competed in schools, to find athletes at an early age. "Most of the hockey athletes of the PON Papua team are still in school, either at the junior, senior high or college level," he said.
The coach of the Papua PON hockey team, Agustinus Rumbiak, said that the target of training for hockey athletes has reached 75 percent, both in mastery of games, strategy, and athletic fitness.
"In Jayapura Regency, we started with light speed training, to restore the athletes' fitness. Later, we will [focus] more on mastering tools, strategies, and mastery of the field. Because all the new athletes [arrive] in Jayapura Regency, [they] need to adapt to the situation and weather conditions here, "said Rumbiak.
