PON XX 2021 will boost Papua's economy

The 2021 Papua National Sports Week (PON) is believed to have a positive impact on the Papuan economy. This was conveyed by the Head of the Papua Province Bank Indonesia (BI) Representative Office, Naek Tigor Sinaga.

"The implementation of PON XX will provide an additional contribution to economic growth in Papua by 0.8 percent to 1.2 percent on an annual basis," said Sinaga in a release, Wednesday, June 30, 2021.

He set such a target because the XX PON event will involve approximately 25,000 athletes, officials, and the organizing committee. In addition, PON XX will be held in four clusters, namely Mimika Regency, Merauke Regency, Jayapura Regency, and Jayapura City.

Sinaga added that this growth will largely be supported by construction sector activities for the construction of supporting facilities and infrastructure for XX PON.

"Other sectors such as providing accommodation and food and drink, transportation, trade, information and communication sectors will also contribute," he said.

He also emphasized that BI and the government will continue to work together to ensure the smooth running of inter-provincial sports events. These efforts include adding efforts to encourage Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS). As for the implementation of PON Papua, BI targets 51,000 QRIS merchants to serve all payment transactions and support the success of PON.

“Of course, this cannot be separated from the support of infrastructure readiness and the availability of a stable internet network. QRIS is also important in helping minimize the spread of Covid-19 because it has contactless technology," he said.
