The Construction of Three Additional Venues by PUPR Has Been Used for Training for XX Papua PON Athletes

The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) has the task of building 3 additional venues namely Roller Skates, Rowing and Archery to support the implementation of the XX National Sports Week (PON) in Papua Province in 2021. The construction of the three sports arenas is currently 100% complete and has been used for athlete training.

Deputy Minister of PUPR John Wempi Wetipo hopes that as a native Papuan son, President Joko Widodo will receive the mandate by building all the 2021 Papua PON venues so that the Papua Provincial Government can manage them properly.

“Because maintaining the assets that are built is much more difficult than the construction. Assets with a very expensive investment value must be used and maintained by Papuan youth in order to carve out national sporting achievements in Eastern Indonesia," said Deputy Minister Wempi, quoted from the official PUPR website, Monday (30/08/2021).

The three additional venues that have been completed have begun to be worked on by the Ministry of PUPR through the Papua Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center (BPPW), Directorate General of Human Settlements since February 25, 2020 with a budget of Rp128.2 billion. All three were built by contractor PT Nindya Karya (Persero) with Construction Management PT Yodya Karya (Persero).

The Roller Skate Arena is located in the Waena Campground area, Jayapura City with a land area of ​​26,520 m2 and a building area of ​​6,067 m2. This venue is equipped with several facilities and infrastructure to support the venue, such as a tribune with a capacity of 650 people, a lighting system for the 1,501 lux track and 449 lux safe zone lighting, a sound system, and a scoring board.

Then the Rowing arena was built not far from the red Youtefa Bridge that spans over Youtefa Bay. The infrastructure support for the Paddle venue begins with the construction of a coastal safeguard in the form of a reclamation of 10,000 m3 by the Papua River Basin Center (BWS), the Directorate General of Water Resources. Furthermore, in the reclamation area, a boat shed with an area of ​​1,750 m2, 521 m2 modular pontoon, 2 gangway units, and 1 unit of a 14.4-meter finish tower were built.

This venue has a track length of 2,200 meters with a width of 81 meters (9 tracks) and is equipped with 1 unit of start tower, 5 units of monitoring tower, 8 units of distance marker, 8 units of anchoring stakes, and 2 units of obstacle canoe slalom.

Finally, the Archery arena was built in the Kampung Harapan sports complex area, East Sentani District, Jayapura Regency. This venue utilizes an area of ​​40,863 m2 and a building area of ​​1,217 m2 with the Cycloop mountain landscape as its main attraction.

The PON Archery arena area is also equipped with a 10,100 m2 playing field and an 8,207 m2 training field. Where on the playing field is equipped with a drainage system under the field, lighting, and sound system.

Currently, the three additional venues have been used by a number of athletes, especially those from the Papua and West Papua contingents to practice. One of the Papuan Contingent Roller Skate athletes, Dinda (18) admitted that he was happy and proud to have the opportunity to try out an international standard roller skate venue built in Papua. Dinda hopes that with this new venue there will be potential athletes, especially from Papua, who can later become the mainstay of the Indonesian National Team.

"I think it's very good, I'm also proud that in Papua there is a roller skate venue with international quality. With facilities like this, hopefully we can attract new seeds, not only in Jakarta," said Dinda.

Previously, the Ministry of PUPR had completed 4 main venues and handed them over to the Papua Provincial Government in June 2021, namely the Aquatic arena and Istora Papua Bangkit in the Kampung Harapan Sports area, East Sentani District and the Cricket venue and Hockey field (indoor and outdoor) at the Doyo sports complex.
