The PON paragliding venue in Bukit Kampung Buton is safe and beautiful

The Paragliding Arena for the National Sports Week or PON XX Papua was finally built in Bukit Kampung Buton, Entrop, South Jayapura District, Jayapura City. Previously, the paragliding arena had changed locations three times.

The coach of the Papua PON paragliding team, Harry Agung Putrananto, said he was satisfied with the paragliding arena built in Bukit Kampung Buton. The PON XX paragliding venue is located at an altitude of 320 meters above sea level, and has beautiful views of Yos Sudarso Bay and Youtefa Bay.

"The location of the venue in [Bukit Kampung Buton] is safe, good, and has a very beautiful view," Agung said when met at the paragliding landing field in the Entrop Crocodile Pool area, Saturday (28/8/2021) afternoon.

According to him, the location of the paragliding arena is also easy to reach. "From the landing site to Entrop hill it takes about 17 minutes by vehicle," said Agung, who explained that the XX PON paragliding race will start on September 27, 2021.

“The Papuan Paragliding Team has only been practicing here for a month. Previously for 14 months, [we practiced] in Karanganyar, Central Java,” said Agung who is also a former coach of the Indonesian SEA Games paragliding team.

Physical trainer Eko Sudharmanto also said that the paragliding venue is very suitable for landing accuracy competitions, but also suitable for cross-country competitions. In the cross-country competition, the athletes will compete skillfully to cover the furthest distance to the Cenderawasih Military Command XVII Headquarters, Turtle Island, Softball Field at Uncen Waena Campus, and Holtekamp Bridge.

He said the evaluation in the paragliding competition was done electronically so that it was fair and honest. “We are targeting two gold medals, especially [from race numbers] landing accuracy. It's possible [we] can win more [more medals]," he said.

Agung admitted that all PON participants had a target to win, including the Papua PON paragliding team. "The East Java and Central Java PON paragliding teams are among the toughest competitors," he said.

Papuan Paragliding Athlete, Ali also said that the PON paragliding venue has a beautiful view and is very safe.
