12 athletes with disabilities will take part in the Peparnas XVI Papua torch relay




A total of 12 athletes with disabilities will take part in the XVI Papua National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) fire torch relay assisted by 48 TNI and Polri personnel starting from Genyem, Jayapura Regency.

Secretary I of the Peparnas XVI Papua Large Committee, Timotius Matuan, via his cellphone told Antara in Jayapura, Wednesday, saying that after leaving Genyem, the fire carnival entourage would head to the Jayapura Regent's Office and spend the night there.

"At the Jayapura Regent's Office an MSME event for local Papuan entrepreneurs will be held and the torch will be in the area for one night," he said.

According to Timothy, on the morning of November 3, 2021, the torch relay will be brought back by athletes with disabilities to the Jayapura Mayor's Office and spend the night again in the local area.

"At the Jayapura Mayor's Office, the same event was held at the Jayapura Regent's Office, then on November 4, 2021 morning, they were brought to the State Building which is located at Dok V Jayapura," he said.

He explained that the 12 athletes who were tasked with guarding and carrying the Peparnas fire torch were athletes with disabilities who had made achievements at national and international levels.

"For anyone who will bring this torch relay, we can't say yet, but all of them are high-achieving disabled athletes from Papua," he said again.

He added that during the three days carrying the Peparnas fire torch, his party would still review whether this carnival would be carried out on foot or using a vehicle considering the conditions of each of the disabled athletes who participated.

"Clearly, we want to show the community the struggle of athletes with disabilities carrying the Peparnas fire torch, that these athletes are not weak, and this Peparnas event is also a prestigious sporting event in Papua," he said again.

For your information, Peparnas XVI Papua will be followed by 12 sports, namely weight lifting, athletics, boccia, badminton, chess, blind judo, shooting, swimming, soccer, table tennis, wheelchair court tennis, and archery.

This sporting event for people with disabilities will be attended by 2,725 athletes and officials from all provinces of Indonesia where if recapitulated with the number of HR of the organizing committee and LO, the total can reach 5,494 people.
