Governor of Mandacan urges the public not to be provoked by OPM Anniversary

West Papua Governor Dominggus Mandacan appealed to the public not to be provoked by an invitation to commemorate the Anniversary of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) which falls on December 1.

"To the people of West Papua, I urge you not to take part in the actions of any radical groups with different ideological views from the Republic of Indonesia," said Mandacan in Manokwari, Tuesday (30/111/2021).

He also said that December 1 was an ordinary day for the province of West Papua, and was internationally designated as the world AIDS day.

"So people can carry out their activities as usual," he said as quoted from Antara.

Meanwhile, the West Papuan Police Chief Inspector General Tornagogo Sihombing said that half of the West Papuan Police, Resort Police and TNI personnel were deployed for security on December 1, 2021.

"December 1 is included in the Kamtibmas calendar of the West Papua Police, so that we will alert Police personnel in this area together with the TNI unit to ensure public safety from potential disturbances from groups with opposing ideologies," said the West Papua Police Chief.

Educational and Social Approach
The National Police emphasized that they would continue to maintain public security and order (kamtibmas) in Papua, not least ahead of the celebration of the Independence Day of Papua Operations (OPM Anniversary) which falls on December 1.

Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police Public Relations Division, Kombes Ahmad Ramadhan, said that his party prioritized an educational and social approach in maintaining Papuan Kamtibmas.

"Of course the National Police will maintain the Kamtibmas situation, the efforts made are of course preemptive efforts, conducting socialization education, then taking preventive measures," said Ahmad at the National Police Headquarters, South Jakarta, Tuesday (30/11/2021).

Ahmad said that his party was trying to prioritize humanist ways to protect and serve the community.

"So, those are the efforts that put forward the efforts of education, outreach, in principle we are keeping the Kamtibmas situation safe and under control," said Ahmad.
