Jokowi Reaffirms Government's Commitment to Resolve Serious Human Rights Violations

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized the government's commitment to resolving cases of gross human rights violations in Indonesia. Jokowi ensured that these gross human rights violations would be resolved by prioritizing the principles of justice.

"The government is committed to upholding, resolving, and resolving gross human rights violations with the principles of justice for victims and principles of justice for those suspected of being gross human rights perpetrators," said Jokowi in his remarks at the Commemoration of World Human Rights Day, Friday (10/12).

Jokowi revealed that after the issuance of Law Number 26 of 2000 concerning the Human Rights Court, the government through the Attorney General had taken steps to conduct general investigations into incidents of gross human rights violations. He gave an example, one of the cases being investigated was the Paniai case in Papua in 2014.

"Earlier, what was conveyed by the chairman of Komnas HAM, was the Paniai case in Papua in 2014. Starting from the Komnas HAM file, the prosecutor's office continued to carry out general investigations to ensure the realization of the principles of justice and law enforcement," he said.

In commemoration of World Human Rights Day, Jokowi also emphasized that guaranteeing civil, political and legal rights is a joint concern of the government. He said all citizens have equal rights and positions in politics and law and are entitled to equal protection from the state without discriminating against ethnicity, religion, gender or race.

"All citizens have the right to get services from the state and have the right to work and a decent living," he said.
