BAKTI internet distribution in Papua is mostly for access to education

Head of the Lastmile Backhaul Infrastructure Division of the Telecommunication and Information Accessibility Agency (BAKTI) Feriandi Mirza revealed that the distribution of BAKTI internet access locations in Papua and West Papua is widely used for education, health services and government.

"Most of them are still in education, health services, and government offices," said Feriandi in a webinar, Wednesday.

In the data presented by Feriandi, it was noted that educational facilities were the most beneficiaries of the internet from BAKTI Kominfo, namely 569 locations, followed by health services at 358 locations, and government offices at 236 locations.

Furthermore, there are 21 defense and security facilities, 15 places of worship, 11 tourist sites, 10 community activity centers, nine public transportation locations, and seven business services.

BAKTI said it was still adding new locations for internet access in Papua and West Papua this year.

"Phase one in Papua 517 locations and 159 locations in West Papua, stage two in Papua 49 locations and in West Papua 52 locations, stage three in Papua 1,316 locations," said Feriandi.

The provision of internet services for public facilities using fiber technology, radio link, VSAT, and WiFi is one of BAKTI's programs in an effort to meet the needs of telecommunication access for the community.

Until the second quarter of 2021, Bakti Kominfo has provided 11,589 existing internet access locations in Indonesia, with Papua as many as 1,236 internet access locations.

On that occasion, Feriandi said that his party was also building 4G Base Transceiver Station (BTS) infrastructure at 5,204 locations in Papua and West Papua in 2021 and 2022. As for all of Indonesia, the total was 7,904 locations.

"Of these 7,904 locations, 5,204 are in Papua and West Papua, this is approximately 65 percent. This means that the focus or priority of the government to build telecommunications infrastructure in Papua and West Papua is still very high," said Feriandi.
