Police Threaten Strict Action against Students Desperately Demonstration in Jayapura on March 8



The Jayapura City Police Chief, Kombes Police Gustav R. Urbinas, emphasized that he would give strict sanctions against the long march to the Papuan Parliament Building, which will be carried out by Student Solidarity with the Papuan People. The action is planned to be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.

He continued, during the Covid-19 pandemic, demonstrations involving large numbers of people were not permitted in accordance with the Jayapura Mayor's Instruction Number 2 of 2022 regarding increasing Covid-19 prevention and control measures in the Jayapura City area.

"If the action is forced to be carried out, we have prepared hundreds of joint military and police personnel to take decisive action," said Urbinas.
 
According to him, during the pandemic, demonstrations can only be held by an audience and the participants are limited.

"So, not by going down the street or long march and involving many people," he said.
 
He appealed to the people of Jayapura City and its surroundings not to be provoked by this call to keep the capital city of Papua Province safe and conducive.

"People will continue to carry out their activities as usual because the police and the TNI will ensure the safety of this city," he said.
 
Furthermore, regarding the issue circulating on social media, there is a group that will cripple the City of Jayapura, the Head of Police emphasized that his party is still conducting an investigation and has also prepared anticipatory steps.

"What is certain is that we hope that the public remains calm, there is no need to panic and if you receive the slightest information, it can be reported to the nearest police department so that police action can be measured," he concluded.
