The Regent of Puncak Jaya Agrees with the Central Government on the Expansion of the Papua New Guinea

Regent of Puncak Jaya Dr. Yuni Wonda S, Sos, S, IP, MM agreed with the central government regarding the plan for the Expansion of New Autonomous Regions (DOB) in Papua which is now in the initial discussion stage in the DPR RI.

The plan is that there are four new autonomous regions that will be expanded from Papua Province, namely South Papua Province, Central Papua, Central Highlands Papua, and Tabi Saireri Province.

In front of the ASN who were present at the joint assembly on Monday (28/03) morning, the Regent Yuni explained that there were several regions that had different reactions regarding the new autonomous regions. However, Puncak Jaya agreed in principle with the central government for the formation of new autonomous regions.

He also described the history of the founding of Puncak Jaya, which is an expansion area of the main Nabire Regency.

"There are those who express opinions or views against and also accept the new autonomous region. We are one of the divisions of the Paniai district. Now it is known as Nabire. Nabire has divided 7 districts, one of which is Puncak Jaya based on Law Number 45 of 1999 concerning the Expansion of West Irian Province, Central Irian Jaya, namely the Regencies of Paniai, Mimika and Puncak Jaya, which gave birth to Puncak Regency," he explained.

The success of Puncak Jaya development, according to Regent Yuni, cannot be separated from the expansion of new autonomous regions.

"From the government's history, the goal of new autonomous regions is essentially to shorten the span of control and improve people's welfare. To this day it is proven that with this, government administration has begun to improve, then services to the community have also increased, and the welfare of the community has also been fulfilled," he said.

Therefore, in terms of administrative history, Puncak Jaya is more appropriate to be included in the Province of Central Papua.

"In the midst of the frenzy of pros and cons about the new autonomous regions, thus the issue of the existing new autonomous regions is not my personal opinion as the regent. However, it is evident that the atmosphere in the area is everywhere resisting and chaos ensues, but today we see Puncak Jaya on 27 districts and 302 villages are in a safe condition. It is proven that the new autonomous regions deserve our acceptance," he exclaimed.

Therefore, if the new autonomous regions of Central Papua Province are formed, public services in terms of education, health and infrastructure development to improve the welfare of the community will also improve.

"In principle Puncak Jaya will accept DOB," he said again.

On that occasion, Regent Yuni appealed to all the people of Puncak Jaya not to be provoked by irresponsible persons.

"Here, I want to emphasize that the new autonomous regions are the affairs and authority of the central government," he concluded.
