Freeport Donates IDR 42 Billion to Build Science Building and Uncen Partnership

PT Freeport Indonesia donated US$1.6 billion for the construction of the Cenderawasih University Science and Partnership Building in Jayapura, Papua.

Funds worth 1.6 US dollars if converted to reach Rp 42 billion. The construction of the building is proof of the longstanding cooperation between Freeport and Uncen.

This is part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, especially health, education, economy, infrastructure, people-based culture programs.

This was conveyed by the President Director of Freeport, Tony Wenas to Tribun-Papua.com.

"So education is a very important factor for this nation, especially for Papua," said Freeport President Director Tony Wenas to Tribun-Papua.com, Tuesday (5/4/2022) yesterday.

For your information, Freeport has not only built a building but a scholarship program at Uncen, and so far at least 12 thousand people have received scholarships.

Freeport also established 6 dormitories in several areas including the Papuan Taruna School in Timika.

According to him, this is one of the implementations of an educational program that aims to create more workers who serve the community as part of the Tri Dharma of Uncen College.

"We built it first with the aim of facilitating the teaching and learning process," said Tony.

He said, in the future with the new facility building, there will be more qualified graduates from the oldest university in Papua.

Now around 500 Uncen graduates have become a recruitment concept at Freeport.

"We are recruiting to work at Freeport starting in ring 1, namely the Mkmika Regency area, ring 2 for Papua Province, West Papua, following other regions in Indonesia," he said.

Tony explained, the basic concept that needs to be done from the hope is to create reliable graduates so that it proves that universities in Papua can work well.

Moreover, he continued, Uncen was established before Papua became part of Indonesia.

He said the construction progress started from 21 percent with a cost of 750 million dollars, it is hoped that by the end of this year it will reach 50 percent with a cost of 1.6 billion dollars, or around 24 billion, hopefully according to the plan.

Meanwhile, Uncen Chancellor Apolo Safanpo said the presence of infrastructure facilities was particularly good in the field of education.

Learning infrastructure, including buildings, must be increased because the interest of prospective new students is very high, in the range of 12 thousand people who take registration forms.

"We can accept all that, only 4 thousand people because the capacity of the room is limited," said Apollo.

Apollo said, currently the number of teaching staff is limited. So with the presence of the 18-room lecture hall, hopefully it will provide additional capacity and accept more prospective students.
