Special Autonomy Gives Extraordinary Benefits to Build Superior Human Resources for Indigenous Papuans

The Papua Special Autonomy (Otsus) policy is considered to have provided extraordinary benefits for the indigenous Papuan people. This is both in the process of physical development and the development of human resources (HR) for indigenous Papuans.

Based on a study by the Indonesian Government's Center for Public Policy Studies (Puskappi), the special autonomy fund policy has resulted in an increase in education standards for indigenous Papuans.

The director of the Puskappi study, Bobby Darmanto, said that the special autonomy fund had developed the way of thinking of the Papuan people to have the ability to compete with other communities and even with the international community.

"A way of thinking has been developed for every Papuan person who gets a scholarship from the special autonomy fund. So that native Papuan students are able to compete with other students at both national and international levels," Bobby explained in a virtual discussion entitled "Prospective Papuan Development in the New Normal Era" Tuesday (10/10). /5/2022).

Bobby further explained that from the latest data as many as 10 Indonesian students from Papua graduated from leading universities in the United States. All of these students are recipients of the Papua Special Autonomy Scholarship.

"It is a proud thing thanks to the special autonomy fund, native Papuan students graduated from leading universities in the United States, such as Corban University. This is proof that the special autonomy funds have supported the development of superior Papuan people who can align themselves in the international arena," Bobby explained.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Consul General in San Francisco, Prasetyo Hadi, said that these Papuan students were part of about 240 scholarship recipients who graduated and graduated in the first semester of 2022.

"We are all happy and proud because a number of the nation's best sons and daughters have graduated. This shows that perseverance and discipline in studying will produce the expected results," said Prasetyo Hadi who attended the graduation ceremony to fulfill the university's invitation, Monday (9/5). /2022).

Previously, Asmat Deputy Regent Thomas Eppe Safanpo explained that many Papuan students received scholarships to study from the Special Autonomy Fund. Then the Papuan youth who managed to enter the police service were also the army, in terms of the cost of education it came from the special autonomy fund.

In fact, various traditional and religious institutions in Papua actually enjoy the Special Autonomy funds. So, if there is a refusal from the recipient of the special autonomy fund, it is clearly unfair and wrong.

In fact, according to him, the Papuan people should not be swayed by the political agitations of the counter-government group against Otsus. Political agitations can only be countered with correct data and information that can be adequately accessed by the public.

“There have been so many positive Otsus impacts over the past 18 years. For example, many students are financed from Otsus. Many police and soldiers are indigenous Papuans whose training is financed by Otsus, this has never been opened to the public," he said.
