Spokesperson for the Papuan People's Petition, Jefri Wenda Arrested for Provocation, Charged with the ITE Law

The spokesman for the Papuan People's Petition (PRP), Jefri Wenda was arrested under the Electronic Information and Transactions Act (ITE).

Jefri was arrested by the police because he was considered the mastermind behind provocative calls and invitations related to demonstrations against the new autonomous regions (DOB) and special autonomy (Otsus) volume II, Wednesday (11/5/2022).

For the act that was considered inciting, Jefri Wenda was charged with the Electronic Information and Transactions Act (ITE).

As regulated in Article 45A Paragraph 2 of Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning amendments to Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE).

Based on this, Jefri is threatened with 6 years in prison or a maximum fine of IDR 1 billion.

Even so, according to the Jayapura City Police Chief, Kombes Pol Gustav R. Urbinas, the police still need to carry out further investigations.

"So, at this time we still need time to check the status of the investigation," said Kombes Pol Gustav R. Urbinas to the media crew, Wednesday (11/5/2022).

In addition to arresting Jefri Wenda, who was in charge of the demonstration against the DOB and Otsus, he said, joint forces also arrested six people for questioning as witnesses in this case.

The six people who were taken to the Jayapura City Police Headquarters respectively had the initials OS, OB, NI, MM, A, and IK.

In order to facilitate the investigation process, the police provided legal assistance for the seven people being examined.

"Later we will see the results, no more than 1x24 hours," he said.

Gustav admitted that it was difficult for the police to find the whereabouts of Jefri Wenda, who had frequently moved locations.

In fact, the former Jayapura Police Chief said that Jefri Wenda was always not in the field with the demonstrators, including during the demonstration against the DOB and Otsus which was held on 8 April.

The joint forces were only able to make arrests after obtaining certainty about the location of Jefri Wenda's whereabouts.

"From all that we checked the mass point of action, there was none, and we made the arrest at a house in the Perumnas 4 area after we confirmed its position and whereabouts," he said.

Previously, the Papua Legal Aid Institute (LBH) had questioned the purpose of arresting the seven people.

This is because, LBH Papua considers that the arrests were carried out without a legal basis and a strong enough reason.

“If it is indeed arrested, we ask for the reason for what? When arrested, was it based on an arrest warrant? It's not clear," said Emanuel Gobay when contacted by Tribun-Papua.com.

Therefore, Emanuel Gobay asked the police to be more open regarding the issue of the arrest of these seven people.

"We hope that the police can explain about this arrest openly, so that everything can be clearer," he added.
