Benny Wenda Again Provocations British Parliament Accuses Indonesia of Violating Human Rights

Benny Wenda, one of the leading figures in the Papuan separatist and terrorist movement who claims to be fighting for the Papuan people through foreign diplomacy, is again acting in the midst of the savagery of his gang in several areas of Papua. As if he had not given up on a number of events that ended up embarrassing for himself, he is now hurling accusations against the Indonesian government regarding the conditions in Papua.

Present with the International Parliamentarians for West Papua (IPWP) in a forum event at the British Parliament on June 14, 2022. He loudly called for a UN visit to Papua to investigate human rights violations. The Indonesian government's statement to the world regarding the protection of human rights in Papua is called a lie because of the Indonesian military occupation. Papuans become refugees in their own country, such as in Nduga, Intan Jaya, Maybrat, and Oksibil. In Indonesia there is also no right of expression, any call for freedom only leads to charges of treason as a political prisoner.

His party claimed to have evidence that Indonesia was secretly bombing Papua with ammunition from Europe. A report from Conflict Armament Research (CAR) shows that Indonesia is changing weapons it buys from Serbia intended for civilian use. At the end of the speech, he asked the British parliament for support so that President Joko Widodo would be willing to sit down together to discuss an internationally mediated independence referendum. According to him, the independence referendum is a peaceful solution.

Speeches Accusing Shameless Amid the Atrocities of Separatist Groups

The intention is to seek support and sympathy from the international community through the British Parliament, but it seems that Benny Wenda is forgetting or not caring about the attitude of his group and its relation to conditions in Papua as a result of the actions of his own friends. It has been repeatedly proven that the Papuan Separatist movement has become a brutal group using weapons to terrorize civilians. They repeatedly attacked residents, even burning houses and other public facilities. A number of arson actions of residents' houses in Papua that he carried out in 2022 included 15 buildings in the Baya Biru District, Paniai Regency on March 19, 2022, 16 houses of residents around Ilaga, Puncak Regency on April 5, 2022, and housing for school teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Ilaga in Papua. Wako Village, Ilaga District, Puncak Regency on May 13, 2022. Regarding the attack case, in June, on Thursday the 9th, an motorcycle taxi driver was stabbed to death in Puncak Regency, previously an motorcycle taxi driver was shot in front of his own house. Still in April, the separatist group also shot two motorcycle taxi drivers in Tingginambu District after dropping off passengers. Most recently, and hopefully the last, a Brimob member in Napua Jayawijaya named Diego Rumaropen died when he was brutally attacked by a separatist group.

Benny Wenda Uses Hoax Issues of Weapons of Mass Destruction to Accuse Indonesia

In a report from the British news agency Reuters, it was stated that nearly 2,500 mortars from Serbia were purchased by the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) and then modified to crush Papuan separatist groups. The news source was obtained from a research institute called Conflict Armament Research (CAR) based in London, England. However, Reuters as the reporting media could not independently confirm certain aspects of the CAR report, including whether BIN had received the submission.

Intelligence and Security Observer, Stanislaus Ryanta also highlighted the allegation of BIN using mortars from Serbia in Papua. According to him, the accusation is misleading the public. BIN's job is to gather information, not carry out military operations. Information about the use of mortars is clearly a cruel accusation with a misleading disinformation strategy. He was not surprised by the rumors circulating. The reason is that sympathizers and supporters of separatism in Papua some time ago also distributed edited videos that intended to corner the Indonesian government. BIN through Deputy II for Domestic Intelligence, Major General Edmil Nurjamil has also denied reports from CAR. According to him, they do not have the equipment.

Benny Wenda and the Internal Division of Papuan Separatist Groups

Fighting for independence involving many heads is not as easy as blinking an eye. Many factors influence as well as determine the long mission to become an agreement or lead to a split due to differences in interests. This can be seen from several incidents in separatist groups which are indicated to be uncoordinated and tend to run independently. Even in one group there is disobedience between the leader and its members.

An incident involving Selcius Waker's group burned a church in Opitawak Village, Tembagapura District on March 12, 2020. The officers ensured that the burning had never been carried out by the Papuan Separatist Group, that what Selcius Waker did was out of coordination and was not ordered by his superior, namely Lekagak Telenggen. There is an indication of frustration between them. In fact, Lekagak Telegen responded by blaming the action because it resulted in losses after which the officers succeeded in immobilizing 4 members of the separatist group in a gun battle in Opitawak Village, three days after the church burning incident.

The same thing happened with the name Benny Wenda. A video that was circulating in cyberspace shows the Papuan separatist group being divided due to differences in perceptions and missions. In the video, the leader of the Separatist Group in Nduga Egianus Kogoya criticizes figures who advocate for an independent Papua, such as Benny Wenda, who currently lives abroad. Egianus said that until now his party continues to fight half to death in the forest for an independent Papua, while those living abroad claim to be diplomats but only for the benefit of seeking profit from groups in Papua. Benny was then accused of being the only party to live off the terror acts of separatist and terrorist groups in Papua.

In the video, Egianus Kogoya also asks Sebby Sambom about how difficult it is for the freedom fighters in Papua who are fighting day and night for Papuan independence. Including asking how difficult it is to recruit children to join the war. Egianus emphasized that so far his party has been fighting relentlessly for one goal, namely to seize the independence of Papua from Indonesia. However, on the other hand he doubts the seriousness of his colleagues elsewhere in the effort.

Benny Wenda and Internal Conflict at ULMWP

Not only with Egianus, the conflict involving Benny Wenda occurred in the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) which he himself led. So far, ULMWP claims to be the organization that coordinates West Papuan liberation groups, including the Free Papua Movement (OPM). Conflict arose when the West Papua National Coalition for Liberation (WPNCL) one of the organizations under the ULMWP had a different attitude, namely refusing Benny Wenda to be the leader of West Papuan independence. The decision was taken after WPNCL mandate holder Ben Yanteo, WPNCL Founder Alex Makabori, WPNCL Member Zet Giyai, and WPNCL TPN OPM Commander Terianus Sato, held a meeting in Sentani, Jayapura Regency, on Sunday 6 February 2022. During the meeting it was decided that WPNCL as one of the factions that founded the ULMWP through the 2014 Saralana Declaration, rejected Benny Wenda's leadership in the ULMWP. ULMWP is considered to have deviated from the initial agreement as a coordinating organization. Ben Yanto explicitly stated that since 2020 the leadership of ULMWP should be held by WPNCL representatives, but until now the leadership is still held by Benny Wenda. Therefore, WPNCL declared itself to immediately take over the leadership of ULMWP from Benny Wenda.

Benny Wenda's accusation is a form of cornering the Separatist Group

When the internal conflict has started to spread to some parts of the separatist group, the agenda that they should carry out is not working as it should. Especially when some of their leaders have been apprehended by the TNI-Polri apparatus, making them lose their role models. Like chickens losing their mother, they will only think about how to get revenge. Slowly their strength weakened day by day due to internal divisions. This condition is certainly a momentum to accelerate the eradication of Papuan separatist groups as a whole. Bravo TNI-Polri.

The accusation from Benny Wenda through the British parliament against the Indonesian government could possibly be an attempt to raise the spirit of the separatist group as well as to seek world sympathy. But what can be expected from a Benny Wenda who often makes mistakes and is no longer trusted by the organization and the surrounding environment. The accusation may just be a thing of the past, because it cannot be proven true.
