MRP Should Support Provincial Expansion

The chairman of the Papuan Province Customary Council (LMA), Lenis Kogoya, stated that the Papuan People's Assembly (MRP) had against the state, for carrying out a judicial review of Law No. 2 of 2021 concerning Special Autonomy (Otsus) for Papua.

This was conveyed by Lenis, during the FMB9 discussion held by the Directorate General of Information and Public Communication (Ditjen IKP) of the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) online, on Monday (27/6/2022).

"The MRP should support the division of the province in Papua as mandated in the Special Autonomy Law, because according to him the division of territory has been the desire of the Papuan people for a long time," said Lenis.

Lenis emphasized that LMAs in all regencies and cities in Papua have declared themselves to support regional expansion in Papua by adding three new provinces, only LMA Timika refused.

Previously, the plan to add provinces had been included in the Draft Law (RUU) regarding the Province of South Papua, Central Papua Province, and the Province of Papua Central Mountains.

The bill has been approved by the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the Indonesian House of Representatives.
