The Minister of Home Affairs Explains the Impact of the Expansion of Papua for Bureaucracy and Development

The Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian explained the reasons the government and the DPR agreed to accelerate the division of Papua into 5 provinces. Tito said the expansion could shorten the bureaucracy and accelerate development.
"This expansion will accelerate development, why? One short bureaucracy," Tito told reporters at the DPR/MPR building, Tuesday (21/6/2022).

Tito then explained that people in Papua have been constrained by long distances to manage the bureaucracy. He said people in Asmat, Paniai, Intan Jaya, and the surrounding areas had to spend money to manage the bureaucracy in Jayapura.

"With the short bureaucratic reform, decision making will be faster. It is simpler, public services will be better later, this is a welfare issue," he said.

In addition, Tito said that the geographical condition of Papua, which is very wide and has difficult terrain, also makes it difficult for the people there. Therefore, according to him, efforts to expand Papua can overcome this.

"Well, plus we know that the geography of Papua is very wide, yes, 3 times the island of Java, and the terrain is heavy with mountain forests, the distribution of people is very high. Therefore, one of the keys to accelerating this development is to expand," he said.

Tito said pemekaran is not something new in Indonesia. He also cited an example when West Papua was formed, the surrounding area became developed.

"With this model, we are temporarily replicating it in 3 Papua Provinces. We hope that there will be an acceleration of development. We hope that the discussion will proceed according to schedule, so that next year we will be able to carry out the expansion," he said.
