Blue Economy is Expected to Bring Positive Impact for Papua

The Head of the Papua Province Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Service, Iman Djuniawal, hopes that the blue economy concept will have a positive impact on Papua, especially in the sustainable use of aquatic ecosystems.

According to him, the blue economy is a concept that seeks to achieve a balance between two related aspects of the marine ecosystem, namely ecology and economy.
 
In other words, the blue economy does not only see the potential of the marine environment as an economic commodity, but also places great emphasis on the vital importance of preserving the environment in marine ecosystems.

This was conveyed by Iman to reporters after holding a panel discussion that raised the topic of Optimizing the Implementation of the Blue Economy Concept for the Welfare of the Papuan People. The discussion which took place at a hotel in Jayapura City, Tuesday (23/8/2022) involved a number of high-ranking officials and personnel of the Indonesian National Defense Institute as well as the participants of the regular education program (PPRA) 64 of the Indonesian National Defense Institute.
 
"Besides that, the use of existing resources can ensure the welfare of the people around them," said Iman.

According to Iman, the implementation of the blue economy concept in Papua requires a large budget support, especially since Papua's territorial waters are very wide, plus various geographical and topographical conditions.

"The most dominant is budget support, but coaching and socialization to the community is absolutely necessary so that they can understand the importance of the sea for life, because the sea is not a trash can but a source of life for us," he added.

He explained that the blue economy concept is not only useful for maintaining marine health, it will also be able to open up investment opportunities, employment opportunities, and equitable distribution of national economic growth due to the distribution of fishery economic growth, thus increasing the standard of living of people in the region.
