Senator: The expansion of new autonomous regions in West Papua to accelerate development

Senator Filep Wamafma said the formation of a new autonomous region or DOB for Southwest Papua Province from West Papua Province, which is currently under discussion by the Indonesian House of Representatives to accelerate regional development.

"The community must support the new autonomous regions of Southwest Papua Province with the capital city in Sorong so that regional development and services for the community are more advanced," said Deputy Chairman of Committee I DPD RI Filep Wamafma during a working visit in the city of Sorong, Monday.

He said that the expansion of the new autonomous regions of Southwest Papua Province was encouraged in the context of the special autonomy law for the welfare of indigenous Papuans.

The expansion of new autonomous regions is one way of accelerating development, accelerating welfare improvement, and speeding up government services with the main subject of service being Papuans.

Therefore, the indigenous people of Papua must give appreciation for the struggle for the new autonomous region of Southwest Papua Province.

Because the new autonomous region of West Papua Province is a form of the government's commitment to implementing the special autonomy law for the benefit of the people of West Papua within the framework of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia.

According to him, initially there was a tug of war regarding the determination of the capital city of the province of Southwest Papua. And lastly, it is proposed that the provincial capital be in Sorong Regency.

"However, in discussions at the DPD and DPR RI levels, it was decided that the capital of the province of Southwest Papua is in Sorong city because the infrastructure is very scanty," added Senator Filep.
