The Biak Numfor Regency Government cooperates with UNICEF to intensify the STBM program in the village

The government of Biak Numfor Regency, Papua collaborates with the world agency United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to promote the Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) program in villages to improve the health status of local residents.

"The STBM program in Biak has reached various villages in collaboration with a number of regional apparatus organizations with UNICEF assistance," said Head of Disease Control and Prevention at the Biak Health Office, Ruslan Epid, when contacted in Biak, Saturday.

He said that the declaration of 100 STBM villages in Biak Numfor Regency as scheduled was carried out with UNICEF in November 2022 in Samber, Yendidori District.

Ruslan acknowledged that the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has made improving sanitation and clean water a sustainable development goal (SDGs) that must be achieved.

Sanitation and clean water, continued Ruslan, are the 6th goal of sustainable development.

Ruslan said that sanitation and clean water are basic needs which include drinking water, hygiene and sanitation, water quality, efficient use of water, and management of water sources.

Ruslan acknowledged that there are five pillars of STBM, including stopping open defecation, washing hands with soap, managing drinking water and food, managing waste and managing liquid waste.

The Government of Indonesia has established a national policy for the development of drinking water and sanitation as stated in Presidential Regulation number 185 of 2014 concerning the Acceleration of Provision of Drinking Water and Sanitation as an effort to achieve universal access to the needs of the community.

To make this happen, the Ministry of Health and several other ministries and other partners launched a citizen health approach through the Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) program.
