Ma'ruf Amin Asks for More Firm Steps to Handle the Rows of KKB Papua Attacks

Vice President Ma'ruf Amin asked the TNI Commander, Admiral Yudo Margono, to continue to prioritize a humane approach to dealing with violence in Papua. However, said Ma'ruf, the government will take firmer action because the armed criminal group (KKB) is still committing violence.

"Yes, I think what has been said by the President as well as in meetings at coordination meetings on Papua, that we are indeed continuing to take a humane approach, building through a territorial approach with law enforcement," said Ma'ruf at the Vice Presidential Palace, Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Tuesday (20/12/2022).

"But because there are so many, there are still violence perpetrated by the KKB, there may be more firm steps in dealing with them, this was indeed voiced by many parties to protect and protect the people in Papua," he added.
 
Ma'ruf said that violence from the KKB only occurred in certain areas. Ma'ruf himself made a 5-day working visit to Papua last November.

"Even though it's actually only in certain areas, so if you say Papua isn't actually all over Papua, yes, it's only in certain areas, other Papuans are conducive and safe. I've been circling for 5 days from Jayapura, Merauke, Timika, Kaimana , all the way to Biak they even asked to add another new province," he said.
 
Ma'ruf reiterated that the KKB violence was carried out by a small group. However, he added, the government will face the KKB more firmly.

"I think it is, so even if there is, it is actually still in the area of only one small group, but it must be faced even more firmly," he said.

The KKB has carried out three attacks in December 2022. The attacks killed five civilians.

The KKB initially killed 3 motorcycle taxi drivers in the Bintang Mountains region, Papua Mountains, on Monday (5/12). Eight days later, Tuesday (13/12), KKB also shot dead a Bank Papua employee in Puncak District, Papua.
 
Furthermore, the KKB attacked a police convoy in the Yapen Islands, Papua, on Wednesday (14/12). One civilian who was part of the police delegation was shot dead in the chest.

Wakasatgas Katasgas Dumas Damai Ops Cartenz AKBP Arif Irawan said that his party was paying attention to the series of KKB attacks in December 2022, especially the Yapen Islands area which has so far been safe from the KKB's actions.

"Currently Damai Carstensz is increasing their vigilance in maintaining security and order. Starting from small neighborhoods to large areas," said Arif as reported by detikJatim, Thursday (15/12).

"We use standard vehicles. Rantis (tactical vehicles), armored," he said.
