PT Freeport Indonesia's Commitment Towards Clean Energy

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) continues to be committed to clean energy. One of them is the management of underground mines using electric trains.

PTFI President Director Tony Wenas said, in addition to facilitating the transportation of mining materials, the use of electric trains also has an impact on reducing carbon emissions.

"With this electric train we can reduce carbon emissions. PTFI has committed to reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030 and has now achieved 22 percent. So by 2030 we are confident that we can achieve a 30 percent reduction in carbon emissions," said Tony.

A number of concrete steps have been taken to strengthen this commitment, including the use of electric trains and replacing PLTU with cleaner electricity.

Previously in June 2022, PT Freeport Indonesia received the Sustainable Business Awards (SBA) award for the Highly Commended category. In the 9th SBA Indonesia award event which was held virtually, PTFI became one of the 20 best companies, as well as the only company from Papua to receive recognition for business sector sustainability practices assessed based on 12 pillars of sustainability.

The holding of the SBA itself aims to appreciate companies in Southeast Asia that have shown their commitment to sustainability. PTFI's achievements demonstrate the commitment of the business world to realizing sustainability programs in various sectors which include community empowerment, good corporate governance, and environmental preservation.

PT Freeport Indonesia itself targets to plant 10,000 hectares of mangrove forest in 2041. Previously PTFI had carried out reclamation of 432 hectares of Grasberg, 1,100 hectares of mine waste land, forest rehabilitation in Jayapura covering an area of 4,200 hectares and planting new mangroves of nearly 500 hectares.

In the future, there will be more demand for clean energy, because more and more countries are concerned about this. The price of copper commodities is also predicted to climb up to 8 times by 2030. However, PT Freeport Indonesia ensures that it will not gain opportunities with this prediction.

“Demand for copper will be very high. However, PTFI producing copper as the main product continues to carry out according to the mining sequence that has been planned, not necessarily because the price is higher, copper production is also high, it is in accordance with the main plan, everything is carried out in sequence with all business plans until 2041, "said Tony.
