Three districts/cities in Papua best manage household sanitation

Three regencies/cities in Papua Province, namely Jayapura City, Biak Numfor Regency and Jayapura Regency are in the best category in managing local community environmental sanitation programs.

"The results of the evaluation of the success assessment of the sanitation program for Jayapura City were the highest at 84.62 percent, for Biak Numfor Regency 74.63 percent from Jayapura Regency at 45.83 percent," said Head of Water Resources for the Papua Regional Development Planning Agency Cindy Kartini Kasenda in Biak, Wednesday .

He admitted that until now the results of a BPS survey of 40.31 percent of Papuans who have access to basic sanitation are still far below the national average of 79.53 percent.

The BPS survey shows, continued Cindy, that Papua is one of the provinces with the highest percentage of households practicing open defecation in Indonesia.

"So one and three houses living in rural areas still practice open defecation, so it needs to be handled with the local government," he said.

According to Cindy Kartini, to encourage regencies to improve community environmental sanitation, the Papua Province Bappeda is working to accelerate access to basic sanitation in regencies/cities to meet the target of 100 percent compliance according to the national medium-term plan.

"The Provincial Residential Area Housing Working Group appreciates every effort and program carried out by the district/city government to encourage the fulfillment of basic sanitation," he hoped.

Cindy Kartini admitted, especially for the village/village sector, sanitation is inseparable from clean drinking water.

He hopes that through collaboration with UNICEF and the Provincial Bappeda, the Biak Numfor Regency Government can optimize it

"It requires the active participation of all those in charge of the Bappeda program, the health office, including the public works office and the education office for school sanitation," he said.

He said, by evaluating the environmental sanitation program, in 2022 the evaluation for preparing the 2023 work plan could reach 100 percent.

Meanwhile, Expert Staff for the District Head of Biak Numfor Tinneke Mansnembra gave his appreciation for the environmental sanitation program in 12 districts/cities of the Provincial Government of Papua.

"Let's work together to provide access to basic sanitation for people in various villages," said Herry Naap, an expert staff member for the District Head of Biak, Herry Naap.

The implementation of the 2023 sanitation program was marked by the awarding of a UNICEF award for caring for the community sanitation program to Biak Regional Secretary Assistant 1 Mahasunu and Former Acting Head of the Biak Education Office Yoel O. Maryen.
