West Papua Helps Cianjur Earthquake Victims

Acting (Pj) Governor of West Papua, Paulus Waterpauw, handed over Rp. 1 billion in humanitarian aid from the government and the people of West Papua to ease the burden on the residents of Cianjur Regency, West Java, who were victims of the earthquake.

Humanitarian aid was handed over directly by Acting Governor Paulus Waterpauw to Cianjur District Head Herman Suherman, Wednesday, at the Cianjur Regent's office, West Java.

"Hopefully it will be useful, lighten the burden on the Cianjur people who are victims of the disaster, the prayers of the people of West Papua may the survivors recover soon and rise to fill development with the government," Paulus said in a written statement, Wednesday (14/12/2022).

On that occasion the Regent of Cianjur, Herman Suherman, representing the victims of the disaster, expressed his gratitude to the government and people of West Papua Province for their concern in providing humanitarian assistance.

"We are grateful for the concern of the people and government of West Papua through this assistance that has been handed over. We hope that the people and government of West Papua will always be blessed by Allah SWT," he said.

The Cianjur Regency Government recorded the number of victims who died as a result of the 5.6 Magnitude Cianjur earthquake to as many as 600 people, because most of them were not recorded, while the death toll was recorded at 335 plus eight people who have not been found.

Previously, Cianjur Regent Herman Suherman said the number of victims had increased following data collection, where around 265 earthquake victims who died were not reported, but were immediately buried by their families.

"Many did not report their family members who died as a result of the earthquake. After re-data collection, the number reached 600 people spread across a number of villages in Pacet, Cugenang, Cianjur and Warungkondang sub-districts," he said.

The Regent stated that in Cugenang District alone 400 people died as a result of the earthquake, including eight people who have not been found, plus those from Pacet, Cianjur and Warungkondang Subdistricts because they had been buried but not reported, so they were not included in the list at the Cianjur Regency Government.

His party asked the RT/RW and village officials to re-data of residents who died as a result of the earthquake and were not taken to hospitals or health centers, so that as many as 600 people died as a result of the earthquake.

"Data on victims who died are based on name per address with a death certificate from the village government, so this data will be forwarded to the Ministry of Social Affairs so that the families left behind can receive funeral money," he said.

The funeral money will be handed over at the end of the year to the heirs after obtaining approval from the Ministry of Social Affairs.

"We have submitted it and will soon be disbursed from the Ministry of Health to then be distributed to heirs at the end of the year," said Herman Suherman.

Acting Governor of West Papua Paulus Waterpauw symbolically handed over IDR 1 billion in financial aid for Cianjur earthquake victims to Cianjur Regent Herman Suherman at the Cianjur Regent's Office Hall, West Java, Wednesday (14/12/2022).
