The Indonesian Government Will Help Hundreds of Students Threatened to Drop Out

Seeing the number of students who were dragged into the case and threatened by Dropout, the Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian asked Minister of Education and Culture Nadiem Makarim to help the educational fate of students from Papua. Tito said hundreds of Papuan students who were studying in various provinces were threatened with being issued alias dropout (DO).

This is all done for the sake of the government's love for the younger generation to continue their studies. That's because students choose to leave college after the racism case in Surabaya, East Java a few months ago. Because they have not attended college for a long time, many campuses have refused to return them.

"Some of the schools that have been left behind are not willing to accept because they do not take lessons and are threatened with dropouts. This is specific and we ask the Minister of Education and Culture so that they can be accepted into their respective schools," Tito said in the Commission II Working Meeting of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia with the Ministry of Home Affairs in Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Wednesday (26/2).

The former national police chief said Papuan students returned home because there was an announcement from the Papua People's Assembly (MRP). But the notice was revoked and students gradually returned to their respective schools.

During the racism incident in Surabaya there were 618 Papuan students who decided to return home. As many as 134 people have returned to their respective schools, while 484 others are still in Papua. At present, students who have not returned to school are being dealt with by leaders in Papua. Tito asked the Papua Provincial Government to take care of this problem.

"The cooperation between the Regional Government of the MRP, the DPRP, is to record which ones want to return and do not want to return, including communicating with the Ministry of Education and Culture for instructions to the children's school," he said.

Previously, on 16-17 August 2019, there was an act of racism against Papuan students in Surabaya. A man is seen mocking the students who are in the Papuan student dormitory. The incident also triggered a massive exodus of hundreds of Papuan students from various regions. Many of them independently returned to Papua, but not a few were also facilitated by the Papua Provincial Government.
