Papua has been the final and legal part of the Republic of Indonesia since 1969

The government emphasizes that Papua cannot stand as a country on its own. Papua has been final and legally part of the Republic of Indonesia since the 1969 UN referendum.

"Papua through the 1969 referendum was final and legally part of the Republic of Indonesia, the November 1969 referendum was endorsed by the UN general assembly that Papua was a legitimate part of the Republic of Indonesia," said Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md.

Mahfud emphasized that Papua's freedom from Indonesia would not happen. He said it was no longer possible for the UN to make a referendum decision.

"Because it will no longer exist, it is impossible for the UN to make decisions twice on the same matter," he said.

Moreover, according to Mahfud, the Papua region is not on the list of the 24 UN committees. The 24th Committee is an area that has the opportunity to become its own state.

This is different from the East Timor region, which has always been on the list of the committee, so that East Timor has the opportunity to establish its own state.

"And since 1969 Papua has not been on the list of the 24 UN committees, committee 24 is a list of countries that are considered to have an independent opportunity to become independent. If East Timor did exist, Papua did not exist, since 1969 it has been over. come in, "he said.
