Papua Cricket Arena, the first in Indonesia and world class

Cricket sports arena is a new item on the Earth of Cenderawasih, even the first in Indonesia. The existence of this venue is being prepared for the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON), 2-15 October this year.

This cricket arena is located in Doyo Baru Village, Waibu District, Jayapura Regency, Papua Province. This cricket arena was built in a package with indoor (indoor) and outdoor hockey (outdoor) venues in one area.

The three arenas whose designation will be used for the XX PON match were built, costing more than Rp288 billion based on the contract.

The construction of this venue is a mandate from the Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No.10 of 2017 and is handled directly by the Ministry of PUPR with partner PT Nindya Karya (Persero). The process of working on this venue began at the end of 2018 and was declared complete in mid-2020.

The Papua cricket arena is built on an area of ​​2,802 square meters. The venue, which has a capacity of 2,585 spectators, is equipped with a heating field, LED scoreboard and Field of Play lighting with a power of 1,000 lux.

This venue has reportedly also received certification or accreditation from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

"Some of the jobs have been certified, the same as the outdoor hockey field that has been certified as well," said Eko Prasetyo as the PPK Center for the Development of Educational, Sports and Market Infrastructure Facilities (PSPPOP).

"We were constrained by bringing in the certified staff because of the policy of closing transportation access at the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak," he added.

As with other venues that were being prepared for the XX PON, the construction of the cricket arena was also interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the progress is still going according to schedule.

“The cricket, hockey and aquatic venues are over. The progress of the work is being carried out in a very progressive manner, ”explained Anggoro Putro, former Head of the Work Unit for the Implementation of Settlement Infrastructure Region II Papua at the PUPR Ministry.

It's just that, Anggoro said, the arrangement of the sports complex area in Doyo Baru, Jayapura Regency, was a little late from the planned target. Based on the progress data, until November 3, 2020 or the 48th week of the process, the progress of the arrangement of the sports complex area in Doyo Baru reached 65.80 percent. Apart from being in a situation of the Covid-19 pandemic, weather factors and location blocking are also factors that are a bit of a hindrance. "We, from PUPR, hope that the facilities and infrastructure that have been built can be maintained and can be used sustainably," he said.

The cricket arena will soon be handed over to the Papua provincial government along with three other venues that have been completed, namely Aquatic, Istora Papua Bangkit and Hoki (indoor and outdoor).

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said that the completion of the construction of the XX PON sports venue was carried out carefully, starting from the design, construction and supervision stages while still paying attention to safety aspects which involved supervision from the Construction Safety Committee (K2 Committee).

"It is hoped that the completion of the PON venue will not only be the pride of the Papuan people, but also the pride of all Indonesian people. It is also hoped that this will encourage young people, especially Papuan athletes to be more enthusiastic and excel at becoming champions, both at the national and international levels, "said Minister Basuki some time ago.

The Papua Sports and Youth Office (Disorda) is still waiting for the administrative process for the handover from the Ministry of PUPR. Just to note, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) through the Directorate General of Human Settlements has completed the construction of four of the seven venues to support the implementation of the XX National Sports Week (PON) in Papua in 2021.

The four venues that have been 100 percent completed and ready to be handed over to the Regional Government are the Aquatic venue, the Istora Papua Bangkit venue, and indoor and outdoor cricket and hockey arenas which are mandated by Presidential Instruction No.10 / 2017.

"Currently, the local government is in a position of waiting for follow-up from friends at the PUPR Ministry to immediately take administrative steps in relation to the handover of assets, of course this requires a process and administrative steps that need to be carried out together," said Kadisorda.
