PON Papua has the potential to accelerate the economy in multi-sectors

Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) researcher Bhima Yudhistira said the XX Sports Week (PON) in Papua could be synchronized with various economic programs to advance and accelerate the region's economy.

"One of the programs that can be synchronized is the acceleration of construction sector development," said Bhima in Jakarta, Saturday.

Furthermore, Bhima said that PON definitely requires adequate sports facilities, dormitories for participants, to fast internet connection facilities to support the implementation.

For this reason, he said, labor absorption is believed to increase, especially in the construction sector.

He argues that the food and beverage sector can also be used by business actors to be involved in efforts to promote culinary arts. Bhima took an example from the implementation of the Asian Games in Palembang in 2018 which was able to sharply increase the demand for pempek.

“Well, Papua has many special culinary delights, ranging from lontar cakes, bagea cakes, Monokwari grilled fish to papeda. It's just an attractive packaging, and as much as possible intensive promotions through the marketplace, so that post-PON can be sent to other areas," he said.

In addition to the construction and food and beverage sectors, he continued, the PON service sector can encourage the participation of local car rental companies. Thus, it can help accelerate the recovery of the transportation business in Papua.

For information, the PON will be held in Papua on 2-15 October 2021. The Papuan Provincial Government (Pemprov) hopes that the economy in its region can develop after the implementation of the PON, especially in the field of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

"So we want to create an orchestra of economic development where there is synergy and integration from all sectors," said Assistant for the Economy and People's Welfare of the Papua Provincial Secretariat Muhammad Musa'ad in Jayapura, Tuesday (13/7).

According to Musa'ad, PON should be a momentum or trigger where business actors can find a place to continue to grow.
