POSSI Papua selects athletes in the XX PON marine number

The board of the All-Indonesian Diving Sports Association (POSSI) of Papua Province has again selected athletes who will participate in the finswimming and OBA (underwater orientation) marine events for the XX Papua PON match which will take place from 2-15 October 2021.

Chairman of POSSI Papua Gilbert Yakwart in Jayapura, quoted from the Papua regional website on Sunday, said the re-selection was aimed at determining potential athletes who would compete in the upcoming XX PON.

According to Gilbert, this selection is also a demand for placing a list of athletes in accordance with the established categories by name and number.

"(From) this selection, there are indeed some athletes that we must relegate. But for those who are relegated, it is possible to be used during the diving National Championships," he said.

Gilbert ensured that POSSI Papua remained on the initial target of winning five gold medals at the upcoming 2021 PON XX. However, he did not rule out the possibility of diving to add gold medals beyond the previously set target.

When referring to the development of athletes, according to him in recent weeks has shown improvement.

Meanwhile, the Daily Chair of POSSI Papua Imam Djuniawal asked the local KONI to be able to return the Bumi Cenderawasih diving athletes who were conducting training camps outside Papua. Because it is feared that their training schedule outside Papua will be hampered by the PPKM policy due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Our athletes are in Jayapura, Jakarta and Bogor," he said.

For the athlete in Jakarta, Imam said he wanted to change his strategy by returning him to Jayapura, due to the closure of the swimming pool in Jakarta.

"This means that if PPKM is extended until July 20, 2021, then they may not be able to practice for the next three weeks. Therefore, we hope that KONI can help our athletes outside Papua," he hoped.
