Defending Human Rights Should Be Universal

Human Rights (HAM) are universal which are owned by every human being. Born in any world, with any ethnic background and social status, still have rights as a human being attached to him.

This was again reminded by Ali Kabiay or commonly called Amaz Eso, an activist from Papua who cares about human rights justice. He responded to the shooting of four TNI members at the Posramil in Kisor Village, South Aifat District, Maybrat, Sorong, Papua, Thursday (2/9).

Eso emphasized that human rights belong to all groups, so the attack is a violation of human rights. “Four TNI soldiers were killed in an inhumane manner. Is this not a violation of human rights? Or are TNI members not human who were created equal to other humans? This should be categorized as a gross human rights violation,” he said recently.

However, the Head of Region II Indigenous Youth, Saireri Nabire, regretted that a number of human rights activists were deemed unfair in assessing each incident. They immediately assess the existence of human rights violations when there are victims from Papuan separatist groups.

However, he continued, on the other hand, human rights activists did not speak up when there were victims from ordinary civilians or the TNI/Polri. “I have often seen, following, that civil society and security forces are also often victims of the ferocity of terrorist separatist groups in Papua.

Human rights activists or human rights activists in the lands of Papua, West Papua, and other parts of the archipelago, seem to be silent, never speaking up to defend human rights. It's very discriminatory," said Ezo. He also mentioned the names of a number of activists, which he said were unfair and objective. “They just kept quiet when ordinary people, TNI and Polri were massacred by the Papuan Terrorist Separatist Group (KSTP). Do they deserve to be called human rights defenders?” he regretted.

He also gave another example when there were civilian employees of PT Indo Papua named Rionaldo Raturoma, 42 and Dedi Imam Pamungkas, 40, whose bodies were burned with cars in Yahukimo Regency on August 22, 2021 by separatist groups.

The incident did not make people who call themselves human rights activists speak out. "Everything is just silent a thousand languages. It's very surprising, they seem to be only working following the sponsor's message,” he said, saying that human rights activists should not discriminate between ethnic groups, religions and groups.

Ezo also hopes that these human rights activists will not always look for issues and prestige for the interests of certain groups who want to disrupt Indonesia's stability and security. “Just see if there are demonstrations by community groups in Papua to voice separatism agendas in Papua. Even though these actions violated the rules and interfered with public activities, and did not have a permit from the police, they continued. These actions ended when the security forces dispersed the action, in fact the security forces were accused by human rights activists of being human rights violators and discriminating against OAP,” he regretted again.

In fact, he continued, if there were minor injuries such as nose or lip bleeding, human rights activists reported it to Britain, America and the United Nations with news headlines that discredited the security forces and the government. "In fact, here I see human rights activists make OAP look weak in the eyes of the world, because every time there is a dynamic related to events in the country, it is always reported abroad," said Ezo.

On the other hand, he expressed his condolences for the deaths of the nation's heroes who dedicated their lives to building a better, moral and dignified Papua. "God always sees your sacrifice, and God will repay all your kindness," he said.
