Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs sent a team to Maluku and Papua to resolve land conflicts

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said that he would immediately send a team from the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Kemenko Polhukam) to areas in Maluku and Papua to resolve land issues that often lead to clashes between residents.

According to Mahfud, the issue of land in Maluku and Papua can become a latent problem so it is necessary to find a solution which includes providing legal certainty to the status of land in the region.

“From us, the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs will form a team because the same problem in various places from time to time is actually a land issue. In Papua there is also a very basic and latent problem, namely the land problem. In Maluku too," said Mahfud when giving a press statement in Jakarta, Friday.

Although Mahfud did not say when the team would be formed, he said the team would be sent to Papua and Maluku as soon as possible.

"I will immediately send a team there," said the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.

According to Mahfud, legal certainty over the status of land in Maluku and Papua is important because it can reduce the potential for clashes between residents.

“How to build land legal certainty in Papua and Maluku, because that is always a latent problem from time to time. So, that's what we will do," said Mahfud.

Previously, residents in two villages in Haruku, Maluku, namely Kariuw Village and Ori Village, were involved in clashes due to mutual claims regarding territorial boundaries.

As a result of the incident, several houses were burned and there were casualties and injured residents.

The local police also intervened and asked residents to exercise restraint and not to be provoked by irresponsible parties.

In order to reduce the conflict, the Maluku Regional Police Chief Inspector General Pol Lotharia Latif went directly to the two villages to reconcile the disputing parties.

"We hope for the support of community leaders, religious leaders and traditional leaders in realizing peace in Pelauw and Kariuw Countries, and in general on Haruku Island," said Lotharia, Thursday (27/1).

Related to that, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs at a press conference on Friday said the situation was under control and was safe.

"Thank God it's under control now," said Mahfud when delivering the results of a coordination meeting with various parties in Jakarta, Friday.
