Kuala Kencana, Indonesia's First Modern Settlement in Papua
Although national development both in terms of infrastructure and residential areas has now begun to be carried out evenly to Papua, it is undeniable that currently there are still many people who think that the entire Papua region is still covered by wilderness and has not yet received a full touch of modern life.
However, this assumption is actually wrong, not many people know that the existence of the first modern settlement in Indonesia which at the same time implements a utility system with environmentally friendly principles is actually on this island, precisely in Timika, the capital city of Mimika Regency, namely Kuala Kencana.
Generally more widely known or equivalent to the term Kecamatan, Kuala Kencana can be said to be a district which since its inception has been labeled as a 'Modern City' because the system used really pays attention to aspects of environmental protection.
Being the first area to implement an underground power line in Indonesia. In addition, Kuala Kencana is also the first area to have an underground sewer system that flows directly to a sewage treatment center.
How can such a modern area actually exist for the first time in Papua?
The neatest and cleanest settlement
In fact, Kuala Kencana is a residential area managed by PT Freeport Indonesia. As estimated, the construction of this area is intended as a place of residence for all employees or the community involved in the Freeport industry.
First inaugurated on December 5, 1995, the area which as of 2020 is inhabited by as many as 28,951 people has a land area of 860.74 square kilometers and consists of eight villages/kelurahan, namely Kampung Jimbi, Kampung Karya Kencana, Kampung Pioka Kencana, Kampung Mimika. Gunung, Bhintuka Village, Utikini Baru Village 1, Utikini Village 2, and Utikini Village 3.
Apart from that, there are also Karang Sendang Villages and Kuala Kencana Villages, the eight areas later becoming one unit in the Kuala Kencana District or District.
If you look at the image from the sky which has been widely spread so far, the eight villages/kelurahan and the entire Kuala Kencana area deserve to be crowned the therapeutic, cleanest, most comfortable, and most modern cities.
As soon as you enter this area, you will not find a single pole and power line or telephone line on the roadside, because everything is neatly planted underground. In addition, the layout of each house from the distance to its location is also built neatly and still prioritizes the presence of shady trees so as not to damage the existing forest area.
Thanks to the existence of a forest area in the middle of the settlement, Kuala Kencana has a water treatment plant with a high standard of clean water and is safe to drink directly.
If you enter the area, the management of the settlement seems similar to a settlement that is divided into several blocks complete with a large yard like residential areas in western countries.
With the existence of a modern area, the facilities contained therein are also no less complete with public facilities located in a number of big cities or other densely populated residential areas in the country. In fact, the distance between the Kuala Kencana district and the capital of Mimika Regency is quite far, which is about 20 kilometers.
Public facilities such as houses of worship, sports facilities such as swimming pools, golf courses, soccer fields, badminton courts, futsal fields, international standard schools, to supermarkets and shopping centers can also be found in this district.
Kuala Kencana also has a alun-alun that contains an iconic monument by renowned artist Nyoman Nuarta, which has recently been highlighted by his design for the Presidential Palace building in Indonesia's New State Capital in South Kalimantan.
What makes this residential area seem to be advanced and environmentally friendly is the lack of use or traffic of motorized vehicles, those who live in this district prefer to use bicycles for their daily activities.
Because of these conditions, motorized vehicles, including cars, have become a rare means of transportation, even if there are drivers who have great respect for cyclists and pedestrians.
When entering this area, there is almost no visible trash scattered or piled up, because the local community has a high sense of responsibility and already has an understanding that cleanliness is a shared responsibility.
Another proof of the principle of environmental concern that this area has is the distance between buildings that has been calculated in such a way, so that if in the future new buildings are to be built, they will not damage the original forest area in the area which has an area of 17 thousand hectares.

Can't be entered by anyone
Considering that the main purpose of building this district is as an administrative and residential area for the people associated with Freeport's industry, indeed not everyone can easily enter or live in Kuala Kencana.
Only certain people with Freeport employee identification cards or special cards for employees' relatives and families are allowed to enter. Not to mention that the guard that is owned is in fact quite strict, but this guard is what makes the Kuala Kencana district said to be safe from the threat of KKB even though it is in the middle of the Mimika Forest.
Not long ago, the open access made to the outside public was realized when Kuala Kencana finally became the venue for one of the two XX Papua PON sports last October, namely the marathon and fast walking.
