The Mayor of Sorong Calls the Role of Journalists as the Spearhead of Development

The board of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) Sorong Raya held the 5th Regional Conference (Konferda) with the agenda of selecting a chairman for the period 2022-2025 at the Belagri hotel, Sorong City, Saturday (26/3/22).

Mayor of Sorong, Drs. Ec. Lamberthus Jitmau, MM,. when opening the 5th PWI Conference, he said that the role of journalists in an area is the spearhead of development information.
 
"We build without any information to the public, it's all the same as redundant, PWI is present in the midst of the community to provide information to the public about what we are doing," said the Mayor.
 
He hopes that journalists who are under the PWI of West Papua will remain in the corridor to carry out the duties and functions of journalists in a professional manner.
 
"PWI continues to join hands and unite to carry out the duties of this noble function about anything in this area, from that information all who do not know know," he said.

The mayor hopes that PWI West Papua members provide balanced information to the public, so that PWI remains in the public's heart.
 
He then advised the election of the chairman of PWI, whoever the chairman must embrace all members.

“Whoever is elected is well managed, compromises well. One for all, all for one, PWI continues to spread information, attracting sympathy from all who see it," said the Mayor.
 
The chairman of the West Papua PWI, Bustam, appreciated the presence of the Mayor of Sorong in the midst of his busy schedule as a regional head.

Bustam assessed that the presence of the Mayor to open the PWI Conference was a matter of pride for the press who are members of the PWI Sorong Raya.

Bustam hopes that if there are mistakes made by PWI members regarding writing outside of journalistic rules, the Mayor can reprimand them. Even if it has led to extortion, it can be led to criminal acts so that they are processed according to the applicable law.

"Development in this area requires the role of all parties, so the press as a pillar of democracy must also maintain the democratic process in the Sorong City area," said Bustam.

He then appreciated the enthusiasm of the Chairperson of PWI Sorong Raya, Lexi Sitanala, who continued to embrace all members. Bustam asked Lexi to continue to provide support to whoever was elected.

"In principle, I will continue to support my friends in the region for how we can run, because I think who else will take care of our profession if we are not ourselves," said Bustam.

According to him, the partnership that has been well established so far in Sorong City is maintained and cared for in order to support the conduciveness and progress of the region.

Bustam also asked PWI members to continue to provide space for all parties so that the democratic process can continue.

"Our chosen friends will support and when there are friends who have not been selected, this is the organizational regeneration process that must be passed," said Bustam.
