Papuan Indigenous Youth Requests the Government to Accelerate the Expansion of Papua

The Papuan Indigenous Youth asked the government to immediately accelerate the process of creating new provinces in Papua, namely Central Papua, Central Highlands Papua and South Papua. The reason is, by accelerating these policies, they can quickly deal with Papua's problems.

This was conveyed by the National Leadership Council (DPN) of Papuan Indigenous Youth when meeting the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security (Menko Polhukam), Mahfud MD, Thursday, April 28, 2022.

"We hope that the President will immediately accelerate the DOB (new autonomous regions) in Papua in order to create a safe, peaceful and conducive Papua situation as well as bring prosperity to the Papuan people," said Chairman of the Papua Indigenous Youth DPN, Jan Christian Arebo in his statement, Friday (29/4/2022).

He views that the new autonomous regions aim to improve the welfare of the people and support equitable development in Papua. For this reason, the expansion can have a positive impact on the Papuan people, especially in terms of accelerating development.

Jan also said that most Papuans are loyal to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). It was also emphasized that not all Papuans asked for independence or a referendum to separate themselves from the Republic of Indonesia.

"I am an Indonesian citizen who is loyal and obedient to Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution and the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia," said Jan Christian.

The request of the Papuan Indigenous Youth for the government to speed up the expansion process received support from the Chair of the Indonesian Student and Millennial Alliance (AMMI), Nurkhasanah.

"The expansion needs to be done, especially now that one district in Papua can be larger than a province on the island of Java. As a result, development costs are more expensive and public services are limited. This condition is already very acute in Papua, so the impact of poverty is more difficult to overcome," said Nurkhasah in her statement.

In addition, he continued, this new autonomous region policy will be useful in shortening the reach of public services, accelerating development, overcoming costs and solving difficulties in accessing public services from the district to the provincial level which are already very acute in Papua.

"The policy for the expansion of new autonomous regions will bring services closer to the nearest district. For example, people in mountainous areas with difficult and expensive air transportation routes do not need to go to Jayapura to get administrative services that are only available at the provincial capital level," he explained.

"In addition, health and education service centers at the provincial capital level will be closer to the community," he concluded.
